Q: I have a garage that is finished. We installed carpet padding and carpet over the concrete. I am now looking to add something in there that will provide a better workout surface. Will this product work with carpet backing? Also, I'm not going wall to wall; are there edge pieces to clean up the outer edges? I'm going to install roughly 50 square feet.
A: This product would work well for your application. And yes, this tile has border edges available. Also, our StayLock floor tiles would work, and they have border edging.
Q: I am going to use this product in a garage/hot tub room. Will it be a good product to use in this area?
A: Yes, this could be ok, and the tiles are not water tight, so some water could get below the tiles; however, the tile is raised and will allow air and water to flow under the tiles. The tiles themselves are waterproof.
Q: I am considering installing this as a mat in my office for my office chair to roll on. But it would be installed over carpet. Will this product work on carpet rather than a hard concrete floor?
A: Yes, you can install this product over carpeting; however, this tile is not designed as a chair mat and may not hold up to the chair wheels over time.
Q: How do you recommend ramping the cut sides? Unfortunately, my area is 15 1/2 x 15 1/2, and there are 3 sides with doorways, so at least one of them will be on a cut side.
A: If a ramp is required, then that tile cannot be cut down.
Q: Can I put my pool table on top of this flooring?
A: Yes, this is fine. You may be interested in learning more about this type of usage in our Buyers Guide. This blog does address using Max Tiles for game room flooring as well as many other uses.
Q: I'm looking to install flooring for my daughter to practice ballet at an advanced amateur level. Will I need a subfloor? If a subfloor isn't needed, will this work on top of the carpet, or do I remove the carpet & place it directly on the plywood underneath?
A: For ballet, we recommend our marley flooring for a continuous surface for the dancer. Marley needs to be installed on a hard flat surface. We have modular plastic tiles that can be installed over your carpeting to then install the marley. Please contact customer service.
Q: We are finishing a basement bedroom and looking for floor options. Could these also be used as a subfloor to lay carpet on top of? We can't find any publicly available subflooring for basements that provides the water and air channels underneath, only the systems sold by specific vendors.
A: Yes, this is one option for a raised subfloor in a basement.
Q: Can this tile be installed over Super TUFF-R or Owens Corning FOAMULAR in a basement?
A: It's possible, but it's also likely the tiles will gouge into the foam, similar to if you used your finger to press on this type of foam board.
Q: Can this be installed over hardwood? Will it affect the wood floor's finish?
A: This tile can be installed over hardwood and will not affect the finish of the wood; it might indent the wood somewhat, but that depends on the wood type.
Q: We are looking at this product for our studio/gym. We will dance with our shoes on and off. We also need flooring that will work with free weights. Will this product work with weights?
A: This floor tile is not suitable to drop weights on, as the top vinyl will crack.
Q: What is the weight capacity of these? I need to put multiple work benches and shelving in the room. The shelves will have hundreds of pounds on them; the work benches are very heavy; and one has a granite top. Will these break? Is there a better flooring option?
A: Perhaps put the shelving and the bench on the subfloor and then tile around them. These tiles are designed for human traffic and have not been load tested.
Q: We have an enclosed 6 x 12 front porch that has become our 2 Lab-sized dog's preferred sleeping area. They have worn through the painted wood floor, and I'm wondering if these would hold up to their nails. Do you offer a better option? I need to cover a 6 x 4 area.
A: Although the Max Tiles are durable and scratch-resistant, they are not to be used in outdoor areas, even if it is a covered area. Please consider an outdoor tile like our StayLock Perforated.
Q: We are going to be using this for our trade shows-about 3 a month. It will be installed over carpet most of the time, with lots of foot traffic and standing. Will this be durable enough for that?
A: The Max Tile can be used for repeat installation over carpet. These will be a durable trade show floor.
Q: I am wanting something like this in my playroom; I am debating between this and the MMA tiles. I have a lot of infants/toddlers and need something easy to clean and soft for the babies to crawl on. Which would you recommend?
A: The Max Tile is not a soft tile. It would be easy to clean, but not comfortable for crawling.
Q: Please clarify how much weight these tiles can handle.
A: These tiles have not been tested for a specific weight restriction. We have had customers use these tiles for temporary installations where cars are parked for a short period of time. We do not recommend these tiles for vehicle traffic, however.
Q: Can I install the flooring after the trim is already on the walls? And will the flooring expand?
A: There should be a 1/4'' expansion gap between the wall and the tiles. They do have the ability to expand in the heat and contract in the cold.
Q: My basement floor is not level and has slopes and raises. Also, the sublayment has cracked and broken apart in some areas. I have a couple of areas that are around 2'x2' and are anywhere from .125 deep to around .250'' which are lower than the rest of the flooring. Will this make the product teeter or be unstable? Suggestions?
A: We suggest leveling the concrete floor as much as possible before adding another flooring product over top. For slight slopes and divots, these tiles will work just fine.
Q: I see that you market this product for use as a tap dance floor. Can this product be used on top of a hardwood floor as a movable tap floor? Would it slide over the wood as it was being used? Also, can it be easily disassembled and reassembled many times for easier storage between uses?
A: These tiles can be installed over any hard, flat surface. It does not slide when in use. You may disassemble and reassemble as needed.
Q: Can this product be used outdoors in a screen house?
A: This is generally not advised. The tiles will expand with heat and sun exposure.
Q: I want a floor that I can do various workout programs on, including step aerobics and high-intensity circuits. Would this floor work over carpeting? Would I need to add a foam underlay for more support?
A: This will work over low-pile, low-pad carpeting. Keep in mind that the softer the carpet, the more difficult it may be to connect the tiles. We highly recommend placing a sheet of plywood under the area where you are connecting tiles to provide a firm surface for popping the tab connector into the loop connector on the tiles. The plywood can be moved around as you install it and then removed once finished. A foam underlay is not necessary.
Q: I am looking to use these tiles for high-impact workouts. I need a good shock-absorbing, energy-return type of flooring. Is this a good one for this?
Q: I want to use this in my garage as a dance floor for an event. Will this work? Does it require a lot of assembly steps to put down and take up? Do the pieces snap together?
A: Yes. This would work very well for that. Each tile is 1x1 foot, so depending on how large of an area you are installing, it may take some time, but the tiles snap together easily over concrete and disassemble even easier!
Q: I have a 5th-wheel patio hauler and am wanting to use this in the patio area. Will this insulate the floor? I was wanting to just lay it over the carpet for extra warmth.
A: The tiles will not create any heat per se, nor will they reduce the transfer of heat; they do not have any insulative value.
Q: Are these tiles suitable for indoor roller skating practice for a single person?
A: We do not recommend roller skating on this product.
Q: Can this go over a floor drain? I am trying to design a basement bathroom floor that has 2 floor drains.
A: Yes. This can be installed over floor drains.
Q: I need to leave an area open to allow the door to swing. I see you have Max Tile Corners. What about an inside corner? Would I just trim the border ramp in this case?
A: Yes, you are correct. Border ramps should be trimmed to finish inside corners.
Q: I have low-level carpeting. How would I install this over carpet?
A: This product can generally be installed over carpeting in commercial and many home installations. This installation is not guaranteed to work, as, with some carpets, the padding and carpet thickness can vary. If the user is experiencing any issues when installing over carpet, then the user may have to install some other flat surface under the tiles, such as plexiglass or plywood.
Q: I am building a hot yoga studio. Will this flooring withstand high temperatures up to 105°F plus and high humidity up to 60% plus?
A: We would not recommend this particular product for that application. Our LonWood Performa flooring is able to withstand those temperatures and humidity levels.
Q: I am looking to build a 7 ft. by 7 ft. floor for basketball dribbling drills in my basement. What is the best product option? I would like an economical option but don't want the tile or flooring to be damaged easily.
A: Max Tiles are UV treated and waterproof, making them ok for temporary outdoor use. They are not designed for permanent outdoor installations.
Q: Do I need a subfloor?
A: A subfloor is not required, but it could help reduce noise and add comfort.
Q: I'm thinking about using this for our basement, which, on occasion, gets water seepage. How resistant would these tiles be? Would they have to be removed and reinstalled?
A: These tiles will not absorb water, and they are designed to allow for airflow and drainage beneath the flooring. For occasional moisture, you won't have to remove the tiles and re-install them. If it currently pools water on the floor, however, the tiles will not stop the pooling without adjusting the slope and drainage system of your floor. In this case, you'd want to remove the tiles, dry the floor, and then re-install the tiles.
Q: Can this be used on a kitchen floor?
A: Yes. This has been used for kitchen floors. Just keep in mind that while the Max Tile flooring will not be damaged by water, the seams are not 100% watertight.
Q: What is the process for cutting the tiles? How do I cut them to fit? Do I need special tools?
A: A power saw, such as a jigsaw or bandsaw, works well. If you only need to cut straight lines, it can be done with saws like a circular saw or table saw.
Q: Can I use this as a tile for a bathroom? What would be the best application method?
A: Yes. These can be used in bathrooms. This floor is waterproof and allows for airflow beneath the tiles. Just be aware that although it is waterproof, it is not watertight. These tiles snap together over any hard, flat surface. Never install a toilet on top of these tiles or any other modular floor tile. You can put the tiles around the toilet after installation on the concrete floor.
Q: I am looking to make an art/painting studio in a room at my house. I was looking at installing this over my carpet. It sounds like, although the tiles are waterproof, spilled paint might go between the tiles. If that is correct, do you have any options that would provide a complete seal that could go over carpet?
A: Yes. That is a possibility. The tiles fit tightly together and will not be damaged by water, but we cannot guarantee that liquids won't get between the tiles.
The best way to ensure a complete seal would be to use flooring with no seams - something like sheet vinyl.
Another option to protect your carpet would be to put a drop cloth under these tiles.
Q: I am planning on covering my garage floor with tile with the best insulative value that can handle the weight of a vehicle. Will this work for my needs?
A: These tiles do not have any insulative value and have not been weight-tested with vehicles. While we have had customers use these tiles for temporary installations where cars are parked for a short period, we do not recommend them for vehicle traffic.
Q: We have a sump pump room that has some storage space; we are wondering which tiles may best suit our needs. We will need to cut (with a utility knife?) maybe 3-4 tiles to go around the sump pump pipes and such.
A: These can be used for that purpose, but they'll be much easier to cut using a power tool. If you would like something you can cut with a utility knife, a PVC product will be much more conducive to that. It may be worth looking into our
StayLock Tiles.
Q: I wish to use these tiles as a permanent installation in my bedroom over an existing low-pile carpet. Will it withstand normal bedroom furniture such as beds, dressers, etc.?
A: Yes, these tiles will withstand the weight of normal bedroom furniture.

I am finishing the floor of my basement with these tiles in maple color. These tiles are a great option if you don’t want to deal with carpets, vinyl, or wood floors.
As usual, these are very easy to snap together but if you need to cut any, you will require a power tool. I will finish the area that needs cutting the last.
All in all, these tiles have made my basement functional. I am able to watch sports on a projector, and also 💪 a little bit

I bought cherry flooring in 2020 for my home gym. 2+ years later, my flooring looks brand new and I hope to purchase more tiles to extend my gym floor. i have hardwood floors in my townhouse and wanted to protect the floors in the room I use as an art studio. While looking for attractive rugs I'd be able to clean easily, I stumbled onto these snap and click tiles. They work beautifully and I'm so pleased with their functionality and appearance. Since I don't have a saw to cut cut the tiles to butt up to my wall, I just used them in the space I needed. I laid them out so the most visible borders have the clean edges vs clips. All in all it's fine for my purposes. However, just to forewarn people, I found the tiles don't clip into each other as easily as described--and I was very careful about aligning them. I installed 69 tiles and I had to put a lot of muscle into getting them to snap together. In fact I had to use a small metal hammer. That said, the tiles held up beautifully to the installation and have stayed tight/level. I'm very glad I chose this flooring option.

We tiled most of our basement floor sometime ago and more recently had to order some extras to finish the job. We also had the concrete wall painted and had to move heavy `stuff' around to make room for the painter. The tiles held up remarkably well with no scratches. They are really tough. I would recommend them highly.
BUT I put them together using a rubber mallet despite the recommendation of Greatmats to not do it this way.

We are really happy with our purchase. I use this tile in my Flamenco dance studio. The tile slightly muffles all of our stomping which keeps our neighbors happy. It also has a little give to it - good for the joints. I love that it we can assemble and break it down as needed. It is not a permanent flooring as we have been growing and this allows us to take our floor with us as we move into larger units. I recommend putting a subfloor under it if you are doing a lot of impactful movements. We used a mat and a 1/4 inch board as an affordable sub flooring. Works very well for us. Feels a lot like a spring floor for flamenco dancers.

This flooring is perfect. I have a basement that in the spring if the ground is frozen and we have lots of snow when it warms up and rains quickly I get some water through cracks in the cement pad in the basement. Not a lot but enough to make it so that you cannot put down reg flooring. The slate is beautiful and easy to lay and will make my basement totally livable

Received the mats on a truck that was right on time and the driver was very accommodating. The tiles went down very easy after they warmed up to room temperature. I laid them myself and used a dead blow hammer to help me seat them. They are fantastic!!! Heavier than I thought they would be and very nice to walk on. They cut like butter with my table saw or jig-saw. I cannot say enough about Joanne in sales. She was very patient, kind and full of knowledge on what I wanted. Five stars !!!!

I worked with Beth at Great Mats after finding their product (raised waterproof floor tiles) online. Beth was fantastic to work with. I called numerous times, and Beth was patient, informative, and very helpful as I explained my situation and goals. These floor tiles look fantastic in our workout room! Installing the tiles over carpet was a bit challenging as they do not ''snap'' together easily. I flipped the tiles over and placed on plywood and used a rubber mallet to ensure a good inter-locking binding. I also noticed that there is a pattern on the tiles, which is nice to make it appear like real wood. I sorted tiles so that the pattern would flow instead of the sporadic look.
