Thick rubber mats are useful in multiple situations, but especially around horses and weightlifting equipment. At Greatmats, we trust Humane rubber flooring as the best option for longevity and performance.

These stall mats give large animal breeds the support and cushioning they need to remain safe and comfortable inside a barn or stable. They are also ideal solutions in a gym, helping to cut down on noise and injuries to the joints of the athletes.

Size and Shape Options

A single piece of Humane rubber flooring most commonly appears in a size of 4 by 6 feet. This can be a standalone mat or part of a kit.

The mats may have flat, straight edges, which allows installers to place them side by side for a greater coverage area. Using two traditionally sized mats would create an 8x12 coverage space, for example.

Some mats will have interlocking edges that allow installers to tightly connect more than one mat for a secure layout.

These types of connectible mats may appear in a kit where installers can create a layout that has a specific coverage size, perhaps to accommodate an entire stall. Kits may range in size from about 8x10 feet to about 16x16 feet. Customers may even be able to order a custom size in a kit.

Commonly, Humane rubber flooring will offer a thickness measurement of 3/4 inches. Such thick flooring is ideal for supporting significant amounts of weight, such as that of horses. Thick rubber flooring is also very heavy. A single 4x6 mat with a 3/4-inch thickness weighs around 100 pounds.

Material Options

As part of the manufacturing process, Humane makes use of re-vulcanized rubber. Through the use of this process, the manufacturer does not glue or press the de-vulcanized rubber crumbs. Instead, the manufacturer applies a new vulcanizing process to the rubber crumbs.

Re-vulcanizing the crumbs from the recycled rubber source (usually tires) gives it new strength and usefulness. It keeps old rubber products out of landfills.

Because of this process, Humane rubber flooring delivers a number of benefits, including:
  • Non-absorbent design
  • Closed-cell material
  • Antibacterial and antifungal
  • Protects against dampness in the ground or subfloor
  • Protects against the cold on the ground or subfloor
  • Resists curling or buckling

Customers can trust the quality of the rubber crumbs in use as well as the manufacturing process, as our Humane rubber flooring is American-made and American-sourced.

Pattern and Texture Options

Although black mats are the most common option for Humane rubber flooring, there are a few other selections customers can make with this brand.

Customers can select among a few different texture options across the top of these mats. A cobblestone top or ribbed top texture pattern is ideal for creating a higher level of traction in wet conditions for humans and animals walking across the rubber. Smooth-surface mats are available, too.

Rubber flooring naturally provides more traction than other types of flooring, but the texture enhances the non-slip advantage that rubber flooring provides.

Common Use Options

Most customers seek these extremely thick rubber mats for use around horses or other livestock. The rubber can support the weight of these animals without buckling. It also gives the animals a comfortable and safe place to stand and rest versus concrete, gravel, or bare ground.

Fitness centers make use of our thick mats, as the rubber protects the subfloor against the weight of exercise machines or dropped barbells. Such equipment generates excessive amounts of noise, too, and the rubber helps to absorb and negate some of that noise.

Installation Options

Because of the significant amount of weight in each of these mats, installation can be a challenge. Having multiple people available to lay out the mats and move them into place can be helpful for dealing with the weight.

For kits where the mat segments have an interlocking edge, just line up the tabs and slots on adjacent mats and press them together.

You should not need to use glue or adhesive to hold the mats tight to the subfloor. The weight of the rubber will prevent it from sliding around.

When installing these mats outdoors, consider placing a layer of gravel or sand over bare dirt to ensure a uniform and level area for the mats to reside.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

Rubber is extremely easy to clean, even when used around livestock.

For an outdoor location, remove any debris, hay, or horse feces before attempting to wash the mats. Then rinse the mats with a garden hose and sprayer.

Indoors, customers should clean the tiles by sweeping or vacuuming the surface a few times per week in a high-foot traffic area. You can then mop the surface of the rubber with hot water and a neutral-pH cleaning solution to prevent grease stains and other bits of grime from collecting.
