How Tony Created a DIY Putting Green in His Garage

Tony set his sights on converting his garage floor into a putting green for a golf simulator. This do-it-yourself project was quite the undertaking since it would require Tony to build up the flooring high enough to put cups into each corner.
To start, he ordered Jiu Jitsu Mats Interlocking from Greatmats. These workout mats measure 1.25 inches thick and interlock together, so they’re easy to install. Tony used them as a subfloor, giving the green the height it needed to install the cups.
''This mat is actually a workout mat like an MMA mat, and the turf that goes on top of it is another ⅜ inch, so I’m going to have almost 1 ¾ of depth so I can pop the holes in there for the putting green,'' says Tony.
He found the foam mats to be very, very easy to install. ''If you can put a jigsaw puzzle together, you can definitely put this together,'' he says of the floor.
To install the turf, Tony placed it upside-down so that it mirrored the mat on the floor. Then, he started outlining his cutouts, marking the holes with a white Sharpie pen on the foam mats. He did the same thing for his hitting strip.
Ultimately, the DIY putting green measured 144 square feet, and Tony can practice strokes from a two-foot putt to a 15-foot putt. ''This is a do-it-yourself job, and I'm so proud of myself that I was able to do it all by myself,'' says Tony. ''It took me all day to do it; it took me about three hours to do it on my own.''
The project required precise measuring, and Tony had to make precise cuts in different places to ensure the green would fit together correctly.
Ultimately, the project was worth the time investment. Tony has his own homemade putting green in his garage. The indoor green allows him to practice in all weather, and the foam mats add a cushioned feel to the green for extra comfort.
