When the team at Edinborough Park in Edina, Minnesota needed new indoor playground flooring for the park, they faced a challenge: How to find indoor playground tiles that are safe for toddlers, soft on adults’ knees, yet durable enough to withstand the foot traffic generated by the park’s approximate 2,000 daily customers?

Edinborough Park opened in 1987 and is a one-acre indoor play park. It features four main areas:

  1. Adventure Peak, a 37-foot-tall play structure designed for climbing, crawling, and sliding. The structure is large enough that even adults can join in on the fun.

  2. The Little Peak, a dedicated toddler area for kids ages one through four. The Little Peak also features a new Big Blocks room.

  3. The Summit, a 60x90-foot multipurpose space, provides numerous forms of entertainment. Kids love bouncing in the large bounce house obstacle course, riding scooters, and playing with hula-hoops, balls, and other park-provided equipment.

  4. The Pool and Track feature a six-lane lap pool and a walking track with gym equipment.

The Maintenance Supervisor, Nate, who has worked in facility maintenance for a decade, explains that the team found Greatmats by performing a Google search for “commercial playground flooring” while searching for indoor playground tiles for use in their Little Peak toddler area.

The team selected the Indoor Playground Flooring Tiles 1-1/2 Inch x 1x1 Meter for the project. The playground tiles were soft and cushioned enough to be comfortable for toddlers and adult knees, while also being strong and durable enough to withstand the high amount of daily traffic that the indoor playground sees.

The tiles offered another benefit: They were very easy to install. Nate explains that the installation went very quickly and smoothly. “It took about four days total while working on several other projects, as well,” he says.

He notes that when installing the tiles on a concrete floor, the team began by installing the border ramps to reduce the number of whole tiles that they had to cut during the installation. Cutting tiles proved to be easy, though. “The material was really easy to cut with a razor to modify as needed,” he explains. “The puzzle edging went together really smoothly.”

That DIY-friendly installation saved Edinborough Park significant money that they otherwise would have had to pay to a contractor. Nate estimates that the business saved between $6,000 to $10,000 by being able to install the flooring themselves without relying on a contractor.

The results have been highly positive, too. The foam tiles are safe when toddlers fall and soft enough for parents to sit on the floor comfortably. Additionally, the foam mats are easy for staff to clean daily. “All around, we were extremely satisfied with the finished product,” Nate said.

How to Choose the Right Indoor Playground Tiles for the Job

The Edinborough Park project is an example of how finding the right playground tiles can make all the difference in a flooring installation. The Indoor Playground Flooring Tiles 1-1/2 Inch x 1x1 Meter feature several qualities that make them ideal for the project.

Fall Height Protection

The tiles feature an ASTM fall height rating of up to four feet, meaning they help maximize the safety of the children using the playspace. The tiles can absorb the shock of a fall, providing a softer and more forgiving surface than the concrete subfloor.

The surface the tiles create has several effects. It demonstrates the facility’s commitment to providing a safe play space for kids. It also creates a floor that toddlers can comfortably crawl and sit on. Plus, it creates a comfortable surface for parents to sit and kneel on while supervising their children.

Tatami Surface Texture

In addition to being comfortable, the tiles feature a tatami surface texture to further protect playground visitors. The tatami texture helps prevent skin burns if a child takes a tumble, potentially avoiding painful burns.

Attractive Colors

These dual-sided tiles are also dual-colored, featuring a variety of options like red, blue, green, grey, and black. The tiles can be installed so that either color faces up, allowing a business to customize and enhance its look.

Easy Installation

The tiles are very easy to install, which is another important advantage to indoor playgrounds. They require no adhesive and can be removed and reinstalled if needed. The puzzle-style edges fit together easily, and as noted in the Edinborough Park project, the tiles can be easily cut to fit a space.

Since the tiles are dual-sided and reversible, if one tile becomes worn down, you can simply replace it, rather than having to replace an entire section of flooring. You can also gradually add onto these modular tiles, expanding your flooring surface as needed. This means that a facility with a smaller budget can buy a smaller amount of tiles initially, and then gradually add onto the flooring as they have the budget to do so.
